There are many people in the Illinois and Iowa Quad Cities region who are concerned with the dangers of the decades old practice of fluoridating our public drinking water supplies. Many of us wish the practice to cease and believe there is compelling evidence that the medication of our water supplies does more harm than good and the intent of such medication (preventing cavities) is achieved through other means such as oral hygiene, regular dental visits and proper nutrition. In addition, there is new, more modern scientific evidence emerging that proves the dangers of medicating the water supply with toxic chemicals like fluoride, especially to infants and babies.
To this end, we are launching a campaign to "Have the Debate" about fluoridating our water supplies in the Quad Cities with the hopes of engaging our publicly elected officials, the medical community, and the public at large.
This campaign is being launched on January 14th with the personal appearance and presentation by Dr. Paul Connett, executive director of the Fluoride Action Network (www.FluorideAlert.org).
Dr. Connett has committed to a public presentation in the Quad Cities on January 14th to make his case. And, on January 15th, Dr. Connett has agreed to debate anyone who wishes to counter or disprove his arguments and evidence.

The organizers of this effort are seeking assistance from individuals and/or grass-roots organizations who wish to get involved as a coalition committed to a healthy debate and investigation of the history of fluoridation of the water supplies in the Quad Cities' communities. This will include evaluating decades old agreements, reviewing the compliance of such commitments, state and local statutes and ordinances, and creating a non-partisan public awareness campaign about this important issue. In December 2010, the River Cities' Reader published a cover story on the book, "The Case Against Fluoride" that included an extensive interview with the book's co-author and director of the Fluoride Action Network, Dr. Paul Connett.

Lisa M. Reisen, Iowa American Water’s manager of external affairs, provided this statement: “Ceasing fluoridation would require coordination of the cities, the Iowa Utilities Board, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and likely the health department. If we were directed by legislation (local or state), we would comply. Any agreement would have to be unanimous among all the communities served, because we can’t tailor the treatment to individual communities.”

While this issue has traditionally been relegated by the mainstream media and modern day culture as a "fringe" issue, the evidence proves that this has become a mainstream issue that Americans are late to the party, so to speak, to address.
